چکیده
‘On closer examination the root was found to be covered with excrescences varying from the size of a small pin’s head to that of a little Bean or Nutmeg.’ This observation, from one of the first accounts of root-knot nematodes on plants, was made by Berkeley (1855), an eminent Victorian scientist, on publishing his discovery of galls produced by nematodes on the roots of cucumbers growing in a garden frame at Nuneham, England. Miles Joseph Berkeley FRS (1803–1889), an ordained minister, expert draughtsman and pioneering zoologist, plant pathologist and mycologist (he authored over 6000 species), went on to describe the symptoms thus: ‘The tubercles were of a dirty cream colour, nearly globose, obscurely furfuraceous, and in almost every case were developed on one side of the root...’. Berkeley (Fig. 3.1) noted the enormous development of the vascular tissues within the galls and recorded the presence of ‘Vibrio’:

The current status of Pythium species in Iran: challenges in taxonomy
Pythium species are cosmopolitan, fungus-like oomycotes which may cause diseases in plants, animals and even human beings. Some of the species, however, are saprophytes and also well-proven biological control agents of plant pathogenic fungi. Since 1968, when the first Pythium species was reported from Iran, ca 44 species, two varieties, and five groups of this genus have been reported from dif...
متن کاملA Review of Fish Taxonomy Conventions and Species Identification Techniques
Taxonomists, ecologists, geneticists or researchers from other biological fields who wish to adopt fish as a constituent of their studies often become discouraged when they find that ichthyology is a complex subject. In fish-based studies, the failure to recognize fishes as distinct biological units can lead to wrong diagnosis. Hence, this review paper attempts to clarify and discuss the latest...
متن کاملTHE APPLICABILITY OF MORPHOLOGICAL CHARACTERS IN TAXONOMY OF ARTEMISIA (ASTERACEAE) SUMMARY Many different morphological characteristics were widely used by several Flora in preparing keys for taxonomic identification of the taxa in the genus
Many different morphological characteristics were widely used by several Flora in preparing keys for taxonomic identification of the taxa in the genus Artemisia (Asteraceae). In the current work an intensive review was carried out on different Flora and published papers and literatures on applications of morphological qualitative characteristics in taxonomy of Artemisia, of which 17 widely used...
متن کاملA revision on the taxonomy of the genus Pseudocercospora
Bakhshi. M. 2019. A revision on the taxonomy of the genus Pseudocercospora. Plant Pathology Science 8(1):1-14. DOI: 10.2982/PPS.8.1.1. Pseudocercospora species are plant pathogenic fungi occurring on a wide range of herbaceous and woody plants. Since its early description of the genus, its taxonomy has always been challenging. In recent years, Multi-gene DNA sequence data have provided sig...
متن کاملThe chemotaxonomic classification of Rhodiola plants and its correlation with morphological characteristics and genetic taxonomy
BACKGROUND Rhodiola plants are used as a natural remedy in the western world and as a traditional herbal medicine in China, and are valued for their ability to enhance human resistance to stress or fatigue and to promote longevity. Due to the morphological similarities among different species, the identification of the genus remains somewhat controversial, which may affect their safety and effe...
متن کاملSome notes on taxonomy and diversity of Onosma with emphasis on important evidence and complex groups in Flora Iranica
Onosma L. as a rich taxa in Boraginaceae including about 150–180 species, centered mainly in Irano-Turanian region. The genus faced with several systematic complexities lead to many identification problems as well as morphological polymorphism. Several authors have used setae characteristics in Onosma as the most important diagnostic evidence in delimitation and classification of species in add...
